The fish has proven to be one of the most versatile surfboard designs in the world and was spawned in the fertile wave-fields of Southern San Diego County.  It was the brainchild of Point Loma’s Steve Lis who was one of the best surfers of his era and he perfected the design in the secretive high quality waves of Sunset Cliffs.  The fish has had the longest developmental cycle of any surfboard design and it started in the back garages of OB with Lis and a hard-core group surfers experimenting and building these strange looking boards in the mid-sixties that is still going strong today.

The staying power of the fish has proven it to be one of the most significant surfboard designs in the history with a majority of surfboard manufacture in the world having their own interpretation and version of the fish; it is here to stay and will only continue to improve now and in the future!

The Hull concept really started in the Late-forties with the Bob Simmons twin-fin spoon which then was modified by the Mirandon Brothers into the very forward-thinking Surfboard La Jolla Twin-Pin in the mid-sixties, then Steve Lis had a vision of what he wanted to do on a wave and needed an short, ultra-fast highly maneuverable board to achieve that vision so his concept of the fish was born.  Steve shaped a sub-six foot wide split tail twin Keel and when he showed up at the beach with this strange looking craft he blew minds whenever anyone saw him ride it!  It was such a futurist design that many of the components of his original design are still being used today!

Today’s fishes are widely varied with many different approaches to the design but don’t be fooled by their unusual outlines, these boards are the fighter-jets of surfboard design.   The fish are incredibly fast and maneuverable so the speed and range of surf that these boards can be ridden is really only understood by riding one!  It is really an amazing design!

Kane Garden Surfboards has always been totally committed to the fish design especially since most of us at KG still ride them! We have been involved with the fish concept from the very beginning and really believe in the future potential of this type of board so we are constantly coming up with new approaches and ideas to make them work even better!

Over the last few decades we have developed a complete line of fish-style boards that fits into most people’s surfing criteria and you choose which design best suits your surfing needs, it’s the best way to enjoy the ride!   PJ Johnson – owner/designer/fisherman
